A Look Back and A Stroll Through the Present
October has always felt like a month of harvest, bustle, and community – and there’s no better time to reflect on the tradition of trading here in Clitheroe.
Did you know that Clitheroe’s Market was originally held right here in Market Place, where Valley Living now stands? If you’ve ever wandered past our shop, you might have noticed the old iron hinges on the wall – they once held the hurdle that kept livestock from escaping down the alleyway! Back then, the square would have been a hive of activity, alive with farmers selling produce, grocers calling out their wares, and animals being bought and sold.
The market as we know it today, just off New Market Street, came later. The stalls we browse through now were once neighbours to the old Auction Mart, established in 1897. I still remember going there as a little girl with my dad – the air thick with chatter, the excitement of the sales, and the unmistakable smell of market day. It was part and parcel of life in a market town, and that sense of community still carries on today.
A Walk Around Today’s Market Businesses
Trading has changed a little since those days of hens, sheep, and cattle in the centre of town – but the heart of Clitheroe is still its thriving independent shops and market traders. We’re lucky to have so many fantastic businesses right on our doorstep, each bringing something unique to the town:

Cowman’s Famous Sausage Shop

Clitheroe’s trading story is one of tradition, community, and reinvention. From cattle markets in the square to artisan stalls and family-run shops, the heartbeat of the town remains the same – people coming together to share, shop, and support one another.
So next time you wander through Market Place or the stalls off New Market Street, take a moment to imagine the hustle and bustle of days gone by. And don’t forget to pop into our wonderful independents – they’re the traders keeping Clitheroe’s story alive today.
