March was originally the first month on the Roman calendar, and we can see why, it’s the first month when we can enjoy more sunlight, longer days, and nature awakens all around us.

Snowdrops and crocuses were the first to make their appearance and now the daffodils are popping up. The trees and shrubs in the Spencer Garden are all in bud, and I’ve spotted several lambs in the nearby fields of the Ribble Valley. Check out our lambing article here!

We’ll be celebrating the official start of Spring this month with the first Equinox of the year on 20th, when day and night are equally as long. We can enjoy Spring right up till 21st June.

Talking of celebrations, here’s some key dates!

Key dates in March

7th – 13th British Pie Week 🥧
Friday, 17th – St Patricks Day/Comic Relief 😂
Sunday, 19th Mothering Sunday 👨‍👩‍👧
Monday, 20th Spring Equinox 🌼
Tuesday, 21st World Poetry Day 📖

Birth month

The daffodil is the birth flower for anyone born in March and they represent regard or unrequited love. Aquamarine is the birthstone, and the Zodiac birth signs are Pisces (February 20 to March 20) and Aries (March 21 to April 20).

March gift ideas

March gift ideas from Valley Living

We have a lovely range of birthday and Mother’s Day gifts in store, some of my personal favourites are the 100% silk and summer weight scarves, ideal for the in-between season.

Our silver-plated jewellery is always popular, so we have added some lovely new colourful pieces to add to the range.

Mini votive and card sets always go down well, so check out our ‘Lovely Mum’ addition.

Straight from the Spring Fair, we have an abundance of new greetings cards arriving daily including our new pop-up range.

Mother’s Day Treat

Here is my Mother’s Day Treat Chocolate Cake Recipe. I have had this in my handwritten recipe book for years so it will have been passed down from my Mum or even Granny!

I know we did a chocolate recipe last time, for Valentines but this cake is super easy that anyone could make it as a treat for mum (even dads with kids!….that would be a nice idea).
