Although life for us has changed dramatically over the past few weeks and lots have things have had to slow down or even stop, nature around us has been carrying on at its usual speed, as well as trees budding, tulips in full bloom and the sun shining, for many sheep farmers up and down the country. April brings one of the busiest times of the year…..Lambing time.
Lambing Time
My family are still busy running the farm I was brought up on in the Hodder Valley in Lancashire, and this year they have been blessed with nice weather which always makes lambing time much easier for everyone.
My children (both young adults now!) have always helped on the farm and for my daughter, in particular, it is one of her favourite times of the year.
This year she decided to video a little timeline of the lambing process. Starting from when the sheep are brought into the large sheds where they give birth to their lambs, the mother and lambs then stay inside until they are strong enough to go outside into the fields and they have made a good strong connection with each other before being mixed with other sheep and lambs in the field. Now, all of this could be quite tricky to visualise for those who haven’t ever experienced the first few day of a lambs life, so here’s the video of the process. Warning – some very cute shots!
Moving the little family out of the shed usually then includes a quad bike and special trailer to transport them safely into the field, and then while they are enjoying the sunshine and getting stronger they are checked and fed outside every day.
So I don’t think these many small family groups currently running around the fields actually have any idea about what is going on in the world around them, and this clip just shows beautiful nature carrying on regardless.
